Affenpinscher

affenpinscher dog imageAlternative Names: Monkey Dog, Moustached Little Devil

Country of origin: Germany

Temperament

Affenpinschers have a distinct appearance that some people associate with terriers.

This loyal dog loves being with its owners. It needs consistent, firm training because some can be quite difficult to 'housebreak'. The training should be varied because the dog has a short attention span. They are active, adventurous, curious, and sometimes stubborn, but they are also very fun-loving and playful. This breed is confident, energetic, and affectionate towards family members.

Appearance

Average 7 to 8 pounds (3-4 kg) and up to a maximum of 11 inches (24-28 cm), the Affections has harsh rough coat and a monkey-like expression. His/her coat is shaggier over their head and shoulders forming a small mane, with typically a shorter coat over the back and hind quarters. It has a coat which is wiry in texture.

Health

The Affenpinscher is quite a healthy breed, but like almost all breeds it has a tendency to some disease. One of the most common problems in Affenpinschers is hip dysphasia. As with many small breeds of dog they are prone to collapsed trachea, which is best avoided by walking the dog using a harness instead of a collar.
